Monitoring Your Home

Imagine the situation where you are out of town for a few days, you have arranged for your mail to be picked up by the neighbour, you made sure to ask your in-laws to check up on the house daily, and you set the alarm to go off if any intruder enters. If your home is not actively being Monitored by a dedicated Monitoring station, it is still vulnerable. A security system without connection to Monitoring will not do anything but make noise. Considering how often we ignore alarms that are making noise, (exiting the store and having the electronic gates set off an alarm, and not even the employees are paying attention) it is crucial that your alarm system is monitored. And considering that the Monitoring fee is roughly one dollar per day, it is definitely worth the security it provides.

The Monitoring of your home is done by a dedicated force right in Alberta that works 24 hours per day keeping track of the activities of your alarm system. If an alarm occurs at your home, the Monitoring station will immediately call the number you have provided to verify that it is not a false alarm and you are just taking a little longer entering the code than usual. In the event that you pick up, you will be asked to provide a verbal password to verify your identity. If you cannot be reached, the Monitoring station will dispatch a Police car to your address to handle the break-in.

Your alarm can monitor much more than just break-ins. A Smoke detector or a Heat detector integrated into the alarm system will provide an advanced warning of a fire and dispatch the Fire department in the event that a fire breaks out in your home. The smoke detectors that are mandated by the building code will warn the occupants of a fire, but they will not do anything but make noise and that is not helpful unless you are at home. So, having a monitored smoke detector is crucial to fire safety.

A Flood detector can be installed in your home to ensure that you are warned of a potential flood before it occurs. Thousands of homes in Alberta get flooded every year causing thousands of dollars of damage to the home owners. Installing this simple detector will ensure that you are warned before a flood occurs and can take actions to prevent the flooding or minimize the damage.

Imagine a situation where you have left on a New Year’s vacation for a week and come back to discover that your furnace has gone out while you were away and now the pipes in your house have burst and frozen solid, causing a very costly repair bill, not to mention your belongings ruined by rushing water. This is a reality of life living in northern Alberta. For half a year we are subject to temperatures below freezing, so protecting your home against freezing is essential. Having seen many such cases, we always recommend installing a Low Temperature detector in your home to ensure that you home temperature does not drop too low. In the event that the temperature falls below a safe limit, the Monitoring station will call the numbers that you provide us to inform you of the danger and give you time to react before the damage is done.
